Hey,
João A. d' Silva João. that's João (john w/ gitch)!
João A. d' Silva
João A. d' Silva A quick note before you get to reading! I wrote these next few emails on a long flight back to the island from an event with Aerie, where I had a *wildly* fun time, and also experienced something deeply profound.
So, I decided to chuck out the bullet points and write out the whole story for you. I loved writing this, and I hope you can take a moment to come back to that night with me over the next few emails and relive an experience I don't think I'll ever forget. And don't worry, there's a dance party at the end.
I had so many bobby pins in my curled hair that I felt like my scalp was getting stabbed. With my Spanx on and a sweet sweater dress, I sat at a table surrounded by some of the most brilliant women I've ever met and they stared at me (almost blankly) when I stood up.
I proclaimed into the microphone: I'm Jenna Kutcher and I want to help women build independent wealth through sharing knowledge so that we can raise up the next generation of women leaders. (I also awkwardly threw my hand up in the air at the end for theatrical value, kind of like a mic drop without really knowing what that move was supposed to be, but there's that.)
I sat down, they smiled and nodded and then the questions started coming, peppered at me with curiosity. What do you do? How do you teach? What does independent wealth mean? How did you get started?
As the conversations continued with powerful women from photographers to editors-in-chief, to directors of marketing, I realized that so many of these women might die with the knowledge they've gleaned through years of experience, tons of trial and error, and career pivots left and right. That fact left me wanting to scream like the apocalypse is coming and we must prepare.... We have to get to work.
I realize that the business I run today might feel a tad confusing and I get all the objections that might come to your mind when you hear what I do.
Maybe you're thinking:
- But Jenna, I'm totally not an expert.
- How the heck do you know what you have to teach is valuable?
- Um, I didn't start in 2011, isn't it too late?
- What I want to teach has already been done by someone else.
- Umm, I still don't even understand exactly WHAT you do.
I've heard it all and I get it. These are questions that come faster than I can answer and while to me, it feels so simple, so easy to understand the need for the world to have YOUR knowledge, I know that you're reading this thinking, "She's talking to someone else, she can't possibly be talking about ME." But I am talking to you.
