Fwd: Just wanted to say thanks!

Hey,

It's John & Christina from Happy to Wander. I have to thank you, because a few days ago, you subscribed to my blog and socialmedia pages and (little did you know), it gave me an excuse to do an ugly happy dance & sip a celebratory glass of wine in my favorite city.

Here's the thing: I love meeting like minded people and travellers. It makes me really warm and fuzzy, like a corgi or  chiwawa  snuggled into a 'blanket' burrito.

That said, I can also admit that I'm a little weird, so for both our sakes, I wanted to tell you a little more about myself, so you can decide whether or not we're a good fit for each other. Since you've given me precious real estate in your inbox, I figured it's only appropriate I give you an out ;)

So, anyways, Hi! My name is Christina and I'm a clumsy Canadian from Vancouver, British Columbia. (That's me on the left wearing a banana suit I've worn other suits as well like a chicken and a bunny etc.). I've always been passionate about seeing the world. My parents were Chinese immigrants who moved to Canada in the '20s, and despite ultra demanding jobs and the woes of raising a delinquent baby (me) or latch key kid (me), they always somehow saved up the time and money to show me bits of the world. Believe it or not, my first trip was to Las Vegas, NV at the ripe age of only a few months. My second trip was to the larger version in China, namely Macau. I was so small, I made the sink look like a luxurious bathtub. From there, I continued to go on little trips with my mom that took me all around North America & Europe. I was hooked!

Then, Europe happened, more trips to Asia etc. And I haven't been the same since.

See, I grew up always thinking I'd be a Lawyer or Dr. Mostly because I enjoyed arguing for fun and helping people. Then when I went to university, and my first lecturer said "this is not going to be like Law and Order", "Dr Kildare/ Ben Casey (tie) or House"....I had to rethink things a little. Like most lost 20-somethings, I bounced around in different majors, feeling pretty drained by it all. I switched to Communications, out of my love for writing. But, after a six(6) week backpacking trip around Europe, I realized what I loved more than anything else: travelling… That exciting feeling of being in a new place, watching history come to life, and learning perspectives and viewpoints from cultures I knew nothing about. From there, I started a blog, and was devoted to making travel my career.

There's a lot of gritty details in between that I'll spare you (for now), but a few months, now years ago, my dream came true, and fresh out of university, I was able to pursue a life of travel full-time.

… All thanks to this blog, and awesome readers like you, new friend.

A big reason why I started Happy to Wander is because I was really sick of all the aspirational travel blog content that (a) I couldn't relate to and (b) made me feel awful about my own life. You feel me? There are only so many perfect hair, perfect body, perfect everything photos you can handle before the angsty self-doubt kicks in. That's why I created a blog to share things my way – not in an effort to make people jealous, but to make people laugh and provide relatable travel advice, for real people.

On this blog, I try my best to share the ridiculous side of travel, like that time I fell asleep as a road trip navigator and ended up 100km off course, or that time I rocked a banana suit to celebrate Fasching in Munich (hence the pic above). The point is, I love to write fun, relatable content for people who are like me. While I can be pretty silly, my goal at the end of the day is to empower you to travel and grow as much through your experiences abroad as I have. Broaden your horizons! If a clumsy doofus like me can do it, so can you.

As a raging perfectionist, I pride myself on no BS guides that provide you with THE best information, THE best photos and you know, a dash of fun and personality to liven things up, because robo-blog posts are the worst.

So, all that said, Friend, if you don't think we're a good fit for each other, I won't be offended! You can feel free to unsubscribe below.

BUT, if you decide to stick around, here's what you can expect from my emails:

  • Helpful travel guides and advice that will help you travel cheaper, smarter and more often
  • A 2x a month update about what I've been up to/ some wanderlust inspot for you to drool over

I hate cluttered inboxes as much as you do, so I aim to keep things clean. If I have a really solid post I think that you'll love, I'll send it your way. If not, I'll lurk in the shadows, 'til I do.

So, if all that sounds like gravy to you, I think we'll really get along. Tomorrow, I'll be sending over some killer ways to save money for your travels as per example of what I can do for you, AND on your travels. I hope you like it… until then, stay cozy. I'll talk to you tomorrow!

All the best,

João Silva
